Yesterday’s snow

Yesterday’s snow in #westtx

My source for this info is the local newspaper which can be found at http://mywesttexas.con and the National Weather Service which is at http://weather.gov/maf

Since December 1, 2012 Midland has received 19.5″ of snow. The old record was 13.9″.

January 9, 2012 is the single snowiest day in our history with 10.6″. The new #2 was 9.8″.

Our snowiest month is now 10.6″ with 1985’s 9.0″ taking second place.

We also got a record 0.69″ yesterday.

We have gotten more snow this year than many cities that set record snowfall amounts last year. So far this year we have had more snow than Chicago, Buffalo, Minneapolis and Aberdeen, SD.

Eight snowplows were brought in to clear the snow. To my knowledge West Texas has no snowplows.

Noontime Weather Updates

Noontime #westtx weather update with a couple of pictures

Current Radar Image from MAF

As you can see from the current radar image from Midland’s NWS we are quite out of the woods yet. At noon in Andrews the snows are a little lighter than they have been all morning. Our accumulation here has been around 3″-3 1/2″ so far. The snows started at 7:30am.

The Midland Amateur Radio Club has cancelled it’s meeting tonight. Andrews schools are closing at noon today. I think Big Spring, Grady, Stanton and a couple of others are closing early today but I am not sure of exact times. Most schools in the area have announced delayed starts already for in the morning. As of yet I haven’t heard about any governmental offices closing. I have heard that Lubbock is sending some snowplows to the Midland/Odessa area.

As you can imagine the roads are a slushy, icy mess. If you live in West Texas please remember that you don’t have a clue how to drive on this crap. PLEASE SLOW DOWN!┬áThose oilfield trucks that are acting stupid on the roads today have much more insurance than you do.

I am not sure of the whole situation at this time as I am at work and haven’t got the new Twitter account properly filtered for information gathering. The NWS is predicting up to 8′ of accumulation today. I imagine it will freeze tonight making for very dangerous conditions tomorrow morning. IF YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO SOMEWHERE THEN PLEASE DON’T GO ANYWHERE.

My 9:30am storm report

The snow started falling in Andrews about 7:30am. Heavy snowfall with accumulations nearing 1/2″ already. Road conditions deteriorating rapidly. Visibility down to about 2 blocks in town. School officials driving around town to assess the situation.

Monster Winter Storm headed to #westtx

Monster Winter Storm headed to #westtx

In the satellite image you see a huge purple blob in far West Texas. This storm is predicted to dump record amounts of snowfall on us in the Central Permian Basin starting about 3AM Monday.

The crazy thing is that today was sunny and about 60 degrees. Two weeks ago we had 6-8″ of snow on the ground, which is remarkably odd. But to have it happen again so soon is rather amazing.

A summer of record heat and drought followed by a cold, wet winter???
