Today’s musings

From http://jimmorgan.us

Today I hit a major score at the Friends of the Library. I found The Legends and Myths of Hawai’i. It was written by King Kalakaua in 1888. King Kalakaua wrote this in a time of weakening national pride in Hawai’i and he hoped the book would spur national pride in the country.

As many of you may know I have a deep interest in monarchy in general and in the Kingdom of Hawai’i in particular. The American imperialism in Hawai’i and the subsequent annexation is one of the darkest chapters in our history. It may only be bested by the Philippine War around the start of the 20th Century.

Some months ago a page was started on the wiki at http://encyclomundi.org on the Kingdom of Hawai’i. My intention for a long time has been to expand this page into treasure trove of information on the Hawai’i that existed prior to the annexation by the US. This is a little known chapter of our history. It is a story that I feel needs to be told.

I have no intention of assessing the political situations and future possibilities for the Hawaiian people. That is, to be blunt, their job. For me it is a heart-rending story of naked aggression by forces both political and religious.

Finding the book today rekindled a spark in me, the spark of historical investigation and writing. Some of my best laid plans for the year are now facing some challenges. 😉

In other news I am feeling better today. Still not bueno, my stomach is churning like the North Sea and I am still weak from two days of fever but I am getting better.

In a clearer mind no I am regretting everything I said about a certain online service too. Also wondering why and when I signed up for a dang twitter account.
