In the 19th Century the average male consumed an average of 88 gallons of alcohol a year.
The Mayflower cargo hold more beer than any other item. This is odd considering how the modern Puritans feel about alcohol.
In the late 19th Century roughly 70% of the US federal revenue was gathered from alcohol.
In the early years of America workers would start the day at breakfast with beer and would take several “grog breaks” during the day. Grog is watered down rum.
A Senator from Texas introduced the Prohibition amendment to the Senate. A Congressman from Alabama did it in the House.
